Yabusele Reflects on His Situation with the Knicks
PHILADELPHIA — Gershon Yabusele offered a candid reflection on his current situation.
“It’s definitely not what I expected when the season begins,” he mentioned before the Knicks edged out the 76ers 112-109 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. “I thought things would unfold a bit differently.”
Recent reports indicated that the Knicks are actively looking to trade Yabusele before the February 5 deadline. In recent days, he shared multiple posts on X suggesting he might be considering a change. On Friday, he even shared a post from a French basketball account that read, “Good situation for trade and captain,” referencing his role with the French national team.
Yabusele saw limited action on Saturday, playing just three minutes and failing to score.
Being a subject of trade discussions is new for him. “That’s not really within my control,” he admitted. “You just have to prepare wisely and when your name is called, give it your all on the court.”
He returned to the arena where he revitalized his NBA career last year with the 76ers after spending several years overseas and performing impressively for France during the 2024 Summer Olympics.
“My role is obviously different now compared to last year or the Olympics,” he noted.
This offseason, Yabusele became the Knicks’ highest-profile free agent signing since Donte DiVincenzo two years ago. He was expected to be a significant addition to the bench but has faced challenges and found himself often out of coach Mike Brown’s rotation.
“Getting Yabusele minutes has been tricky when he’s healthy,” Brown explained. “The top eight players are primarily the starters, plus a few key contributors. It’s tough to find playing time when you consider the limited minutes.”
Brown also singled out Ariel Hukporti for commendation, particularly for his impactful four minutes in the fourth quarter when key players were in foul trouble. “Ariel’s been bouncing back and forth with the G League but has been ready when we needed him. He was exceptional during those crucial moments,” Brown added.
In contrast, Jordan Clarkson’s spot in the rotation has dwindled. He sat out on Saturday, played only two minutes against the Mavericks earlier in the week, and featured briefly during garbage time against the Nets. It’s a noticeable decline, and the reasons behind it seem a bit unclear.
