Recent Talks Between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared on Saturday that the talks in Abu Dhabi involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine were “constructive.” He described them as the first trilateral discussions of this kind in quite a while, concentrating on what might help end the conflict with Moscow.
Zelenskiy explained that the two-day discussions, which took place in the United Arab Emirates, brought together political and military representatives from all three nations. They addressed security issues, including the necessity for U.S. surveillance support.
“A lot was covered, but the key is that the conversation remained productive,” he mentioned on X, adding that further meetings might happen as soon as next week. He emphasized that the teams would report back to their capitals on the outcomes of the negotiations and coordinate future actions with their leaders.
These discussions in Abu Dhabi followed earlier talks held in Moscow, which included Russian President Vladimir Putin along with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Josh Gruenbaum, the head of the Federal Services Administration.
Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, noted that the “very frank” talks lasted about four hours, during which U.S. officials updated their Russian counterparts on recent engagements with Ukrainian and European leaders.
Ushakov pointed out that the Russian president and the U.S. representatives reaffirmed that resolving territorial issues is crucial. Without that, a lasting settlement seems remote, according to a Kremlin summary of the talks.
Territorial concerns continue to be a significant sticking point, with Russia pushing Ukraine to concede parts of the Donbas region, still not fully under Russian control.
Zelenskiy stated on Sunday that the Russian military had unleashed over 1,700 attack drones, along with more than 1,380 guided air bombs and 69 missiles in just the past week, which is quite alarming.
The European Commission recently announced that 447 emergency generators would be deployed to assist in restoring power to vital services, as over a million Ukrainians are facing power outages during the bitter cold. They declared, “The EU will not let Russia freeze Ukraine into submission and will continue to support Ukrainians through this winter.”
