Conflicting stories emerge after ICE agents fatally shoot protester Alex Pretti in Minneapolis

Shooting of Alex Preti in Minneapolis Sparks Controversy

The shooting of 37-year-old Alex Preti in Minneapolis has generated conflicting narratives over the weekend. While President Donald Trump’s administration accused Preti of resisting arrest, his family characterized him as a “kind-hearted person.”

Preti, who worked as an ICU nurse for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, is the second anti-ICE protester to be fatally shot in Minneapolis this month. Homeland Security Commissioner Kristi Noem claimed that Preti was armed and “violently resisted” arrest, prompting ICE officers to fire out of fear.

Video footage of the incident shows ICE officers disarming Preti shortly before he was shot. It appears he became involved in a skirmish with officers while attempting to aid another protester in distress.

A federal judge swiftly intervened, prohibiting the Trump administration from damaging or interfering with any evidence tied to the shooting incident.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation had moved quickly with a lawsuit to ensure evidence would not be destroyed. This lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, lists several federal agencies as defendants.

Judge Eric Tostrad’s ruling prevents federal agents from suppressing evidence collected at the scene or in their possession, which state authorities had been restricted from examining before.

A public hearing regarding this order is set for Monday. Preti’s parents expressed their heartbreak and anger, denouncing the law enforcement narrative as “disgusting lies.” They emphasize that their son was a compassionate individual who cared for others deeply, particularly the veterans he treated as an ICU nurse in Minneapolis.

Frustrated by the administration’s portrayal of their son, they stated, “The infuriating lies… are reprehensible. Alex clearly did not have a gun when he was attacked by… ICE thugs.” They claimed he was merely trying to protect a woman being pinned down by agents.

Contrarily, President Trump asserted that Preti was indeed armed during the incident and even had spare magazines. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller took a more aggressive stance, labeling Preti a “candidate assassin” and “domestic terrorist.”

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has called for a “full, fair, and transparent investigation” into what occurred.

Ellison, sharing in the public’s grief and anger over Preti’s death, criticized ICE’s activities in Minnesota, describing them as an “unlawful and unconstitutional occupation.”
