At Least 3 New Yorkers Discovered Deceased in the Cold After Hochul Rejected Assistance from Trump Administration

Tragic Losses in New York Amid Freezing Temperatures

At least three homeless individuals were found dead in New York City early Saturday morning during extreme cold conditions. This unfortunate incident follows Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul’s rejection of a federal aid proposal from the previous Trump administration.

Before a significant winter storm was anticipated, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reached out to New York. However, Hochul responded via social media, insisting that she would only accept assistance if changes were made to immigration enforcement policies.

According to Hochul’s post, “Secretary Noem has offered assistance to New York ahead of the impending snowstorm. I shared that the quickest way to help is for ICE to withdraw so people can safely access warming centers, shelters, hospitals, and houses of worship.” This statement came just hours before the grim discoveries.

As temperatures plunged to 10 degrees overnight, authorities found three bodies across the city. A 67-year-old man was discovered on Third Avenue in Murray Hill around 7:45 a.m. Shortly after, a 64-year-old woman was located in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and a man in his 30s was found on Warren Street in Cobble Hill.

Police suspect all three were homeless, and initial reports suggest no foul play was involved. The city medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.

Investigators are inclined to believe that all three died due to the harsh weather conditions. Reports indicated that none of the bodies showed visible signs of trauma.

Mayor Zoran Mamdani of the city mentioned that a code blue had been declared on Thursday. This emergency protocol ensures that anyone requesting shelter will receive a bed.

“No one will be turned away,” Mamdani reassured. He also noted that all hospitals and Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters are following a fully open-door policy. This current cold spell is reportedly the worst the city has faced in about eight years.

In response to the situation, NBC News reported that Noem announced FEMA’s pre-deployment of 30 generators, as well as 250,000 meals and 400,000 liters of water for affected states.
