Chad Wolf, the former Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, criticized Senate Democrats for their attempts to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This move follows the recent shooting of 37-year-old Alex Preti in Minneapolis and could potentially lead to a government shutdown.
On “The Big Weekend Show,” Wolf described the Democrats’ actions as “bizarre,” arguing that their focus is on shutting down the government rather than seeking reforms for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He suggested that instead of, you know, thinking of positive solutions, all they can come up with is a government shutdown.
Senate Democrats, under the leadership of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, intend to oppose the funding bill after the Minneapolis incident disrupted an already fragile agreement. Schumer maintains that the current bill is “woefully insufficient” to address alleged human rights violations by ICE. He and his party plan to block the bill as long as it contains DHS funding, which raises the likelihood of a partial government shutdown as the January 30 deadline approaches.
Wolf noted that if a partial shutdown does occur, only the agencies that haven’t received funding from Congress would have to reduce or halt operations. This could potentially make ICE and Border Patrol agents “less safe,” but it wouldn’t stop them from fulfilling their responsibilities. He pointed out that the DHS has sufficient resources, with a substantial bill already passed that allocated significant funding to both agencies. It’s possible they’re considering a more sustainable solution, and many personnel would remain exempt during a shutdown, enabling them to continue their mission of ensuring national security and maintaining public safety.
