Trump Criticizes Democratic Climate Policies
On Saturday, former President Donald Trump took aim at the climate policies of the Democratic Party. His commentary came on the heels of a shift among scientists regarding one of the more severe global warming scenarios previously endorsed by a United Nations-supported climate model.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed, “Great! After 15 years of Democratic administrations claiming that ‘climate change’ would annihilate our planet, the UN’s leading climate committee has just acknowledged that its predictions (RCP8.5) were incorrect! Incorrect! Incorrect!”
He accused Democrats of manipulating fears surrounding climate change to push energy policies and increase government spending. “For far too long, climate change activism has been wielded by Democratic leaders to alarm the American public, promote poor energy strategies, and finance millions in dubious research programs,” he stated. “Unlike Democrats—who, in my view, are leveraging climate change hype to promote a so-called green fraud—my administration will base its policies on truth, science, and actual facts.”
Trump’s remarks echoed a broader context where climate scientists have abandoned the most extreme emissions scenarios devised by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These dire forecasts included significant rises in global temperatures and sea levels, widespread crop failures, and even potential extinctions on a massive scale.
Specifically, the RCP8.5 scenario predicted severe climate outcomes under extreme emissions assumptions. However, according to reports, researchers will phase it out after determining it doesn’t represent the most probable future trajectory, considering advances in renewable energy and current trends in emissions and climate policy.
A study published in the journal Geoscientific Model Development indicated that while future climate scenarios should still encompass a broad range of outcomes, the likelihood of high emissions scenarios—like those quantified by SSP5-8.5—has become less plausible given the current trajectory of renewable energy costs and policy developments.
In a previous speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump characterized climate change as a “fraud.” He remarked, “In my view, this is the greatest fraud ever committed globally. The UN’s predictions and those from others were largely wrong, often for misguided reasons.” He went on to suggest that these projections were crafted by “stupid people” and criticized them for undermining national interests and opportunities for success in various countries.
Trump’s comments have sparked backlash from Democratic officials. For instance, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described his statements as “complete disinformation,” asserting that claims framing climate change as a hoax are devoid of truth.
In defense of Trump, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, during an interview, supported the former president’s views, highlighting the negative economic impacts of what he described as left-leaning climate policies.
