Philip Rivers Interviewed for Buffalo Bills Head Coach Position
Recently, the Buffalo Bills made headlines by interviewing Philip Rivers for their head coaching vacancy, sparking curiosity about whether this was a serious consideration for replacing Sean McDermott.
Interestingly, Rivers, who’s now 44, surprised many by making a return to the Indianapolis Colts, where he started three games following an injury. Now, there’s growing speculation regarding his potential role as head coach in Buffalo.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Rivers has been actively involved in interviews for the Bills’ head coaching job and has made a significant impression. “He shattered the interview,” Rapoport noted, adding that Rivers is someone to keep an eye on as this situation unfolds.
After playing 17 seasons with the Chargers, Rivers took a step back to serve as a high school head coach in Fairhope, Alabama, from 2021 to 2024. Rapoport remarked that despite his high school coaching stint, Rivers has had substantial experience as a leader and play-caller throughout his career.
As the Bills explore options for their next head coach, they are also reviewing other candidates, including Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Wudinsky and former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who has a history with the Bills and quarterback Josh Allen.
Rivers’ recent return to the NFL has been quite the spectacle. Although he ended up going 0-3 during his brief comeback, it was exciting to see him back on the field after a long hiatus. He stepped in for an injured Daniel Jones, bringing a mix of both highlights and challenges with four touchdowns and three interceptions across those games.
Meanwhile, discussions continue about McDermott potentially taking a break from coaching, as he concluded his nine-year tenure with an impressive record of 98-50. The Bills have seen playoff success, but were unable to clinch a Super Bowl title during his leadership, which included two AFC Championship game appearances.
