Trump administration examining all aspects of Alex Pretti shooting in Minneapolis

President Trump has stated that his administration is “reviewing everything” following the shooting in Minneapolis that resulted in the death of 37-year-old nurse Alex J. Preti.

While he didn’t confirm whether the federal officer who fired the fatal shot acted appropriately, Trump mentioned to an outlet that they’re considering all aspects of the situation. “We’re looking at everything, we’re considering it, and we’re going to make a decision,” he said, as inquiries intensify regarding this incident and its implications for broader immigration enforcement in the area.

Preti was shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent while he was photographing federal agents on the streets of Minneapolis. His death has raised significant public outcry and protests.

The operation by the Border Patrol was aimed at capturing Jose Huerta-Chuma, an undocumented immigrant with a criminal history that includes domestic assault and other offenses. Initially, officials claimed Preti approached with a loaded handgun and resisted disarming the officers. However, videos and eyewitness testimonies that have circulated online challenge this narrative, leading to questions about whether Preti posed a threat when he was shot.

Trump expressed his disapproval of all forms of shootings, stating, “I don’t like any type of shooting. I don’t like it,” while also referring to the gun found with Preti as “very powerful.” In the broader context, Trump tied the presence of federal agents in Minnesota to allegations of widespread welfare fraud in the state, suggesting that such enforcement is necessary to prevent human rights abuses.

This incident is not an isolated one; another individual, Renee Good, was shot and killed by ICE agents earlier in January during a different operation, prompting protests against ICE’s domestic enforcement practices.

Trump indicated that, while federal enforcement efforts are important, there may eventually be a withdrawal of federal agents from ongoing operations, although he didn’t specify a timeline. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt reiterated that cooperation among law enforcement agencies is crucial, emphasizing that no one, including President Trump, desires to see injuries or fatalities.
