Denver’s AFC Championship Game Highlights
DENVER — Christian Gonzalez is a player who truly embodies the spirit of give and take.
On a snowy Sunday evening at Empower Field, Gonzalez’s crucial interception sealed New England’s narrow 10-7 win against the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, propelling the Patriots to the 2026 Super Bowl.
The game was ultimately decided with just over two minutes remaining, thanks to an interception of Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
Earlier in the game, Gonzalez had struggled, giving up a significant 52-yard pass to Marvin Mims Jr. This mishap briefly boosted hope for the Broncos and Stidham, who had been a backup without an NFL pass since 2023.
This play led to Denver’s only touchdown, giving them a brief 7-0 advantage.
As the Broncos aimed to even the score, Gonzalez flipped the script in the second half, making a game-changing interception.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel remarked, “In championship games, you need your best players to step up. He’s had some ups and downs, but lately, he’s been exceptional.” He added, “A few weeks back, I noticed a shift in him—different player, different person. He certainly has the talent to be elite.”
Sunday’s pivotal interception was notably Gonzalez’s first of the season. Patriots safety Jaylin Hawkins expressed disbelief at this fact, emphasizing the significance of the moment. “Christian always brings his A-game,” he said. “It’s wonderful to know he’ll be a key part of our team moving forward.”
Gonzalez himself commented on the interception, explaining that he spotted Mims running and anticipated Stidham’s throw. “I don’t think the timing could have been better,” he shared.
Reflecting on the earlier 52-yard play that cost his team, he framed it as “just a miscommunication.” He acknowledged, “But it’s a play I should have made. If I let it linger, I wouldn’t be able to focus on the next one.”
He even humorously claimed to have forgotten about the mishap until questioned by reporters. “Honestly, it was the last thing on my mind,” he said, addressing the challenge of bouncing back from mistakes.
Fellow cornerback Carlton Davis III added, “As cornerbacks, we need to maintain a short memory. We all trust Christian, and I’m thrilled for him. The pick was crucial for us; that’s what ultimately counts.”
