Former President Donald Trump faced two such threats. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro narrowly escaped harm when his home was set ablaze. In a tragic event, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson was shot in Manhattan, and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was slain by a sniper during a speech. Even local officials haven’t been spared, having been shot in their own homes.
Experts express concern that political violence is increasing, even as murder rates decline to their lowest in 125 years by 2025. Victims span the political spectrum.
A new California bill has emerged, named in honor of Charlie Kirk and Melissa Hortman, which adds “political affiliation” to the list of hate crimes.
July 13, 2024: Shooting at Trump Rally
Thomas Crooks, a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, opened fire from a rooftop during a Trump campaign rally in Butler, close to Pittsburgh. One bullet grazed Trump’s ear, while a firefighter, Corey Comperatore, lost his life trying to shield his family from the gunfire.
Governor Shapiro honored Comperatore, calling him a hero. Authorities have shared limited details regarding the shooter and his motives, but Comperatore died during a counter-attack by police.
White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson reflected on the violence, stating that, as a survivor of two assassination attempts and a close friend of Kirk, Trump understands the threats posed by political violence. Trump issued a unifying call to embrace American values, especially after Kirk’s death.
September 15, 2024: Sniper Arrest at Trump Golf Course
A 58-year-old man, Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested after taking aim with an AK-47 at Trump while he was golfing in Florida. Later found guilty, Routh could face life in prison.
Interestingly, no one was harmed during this incident. The arrest came after Secret Service found a rifle barrel hidden near the golf course.
December 4, 2024: UnitedHealthcare CEO Assassination
Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in New York City, reportedly in a politically motivated attack. Luigi Mangione has pleaded not guilty to various charges related to the incident.
Authorities discovered a magazine that seemed to ponder the motives behind Thompson’s murder.
April 13, 2025: Arson Attack on Governor Shapiro
An attack occurred at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion while Shapiro’s family was asleep. The fire set by an arsonist coincided with the beginning of Passover.
Cody Ballmer, the 39-year-old suspect, later pled guilty and received a lengthy prison sentence.
May 21, 2025: Anti-Semitic Shooting in D.C.
A gunman outside the Capital Jewish Museum killed a young couple, both of whom worked for the Israeli embassy. The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, has pleaded not guilty.
June 14, 2025: Attack on Minnesota State Representative
Another tragic incident saw Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband murdered in their home. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot but survived. The primary suspect, Vance Boulter, pleaded not guilty.
September 10, 2025: Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk was shot during a public address at a university event. He later died as security transported him to a hospital. The accused, Tyler Robinson, is scheduled for court hearings.
January 6, 2026: Vandalism at Vice President’s Home
A 26-year-old man vandalized Vice President J.D. Vance’s home. William DeFoor, the accused, has a history of property damage. Fortunately, Vance’s family was away at the time.
