Support from White House Amid Minneapolis Shooting Fallout
On Monday, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt expressed her backing for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and federal law enforcement leaders in Minnesota. This comes in light of increased tensions following the shooting death of Alex Pretty in Minneapolis on Saturday.
President Trump announced that he would be sending Border Patrol Chief Tom Homan to Minnesota, which some interpret as a sign of dissatisfaction with the local officials managing the situation.
Leavitt stated, “Secretary Noem continues to have the tremendous trust and confidence of the President of the United States and continues to oversee all immigration enforcement operations across the Department of Homeland Security.” It appears that the President was not pleased with how local officials responded to the shooting incident.
The Department of Homeland Security, which Noem oversees, handles a broad range of operations including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and FEMA. So, on top of the shooting crisis, Noem was also managing the impact of a significant snowstorm affecting many Americans on Sunday.
Leavitt noted, “Of course, Secretary Noem is also the head of FEMA, and we are in the midst of a severe winter storm.” She emphasized Homan’s unique ability to travel to Minnesota and engage in productive discussions with state and local officials, indicating he would be on a plane soon to do so.
During the press conference, Leavitt defended U.S. Border Patrol Senior Commander Gregor Bovino, calling him “a great guy and a great professional.” She reassured that he would continue to lead Customs and Border Protection while Homan would act as the main point of contact in Minneapolis.
Trump’s early Monday announcement included plans to deploy Border Patrol agents directly under his command in Minnesota, prompting speculation about his confidence in federal immigration officials.
“Tonight I’m sending Tom Homan to Minnesota. He’s not directly involved there, but he knows many people in the area,” Trump stated on Truth Social. He described Homan as tough yet fair, underscoring that Homan would report directly back to him.
Leavitt clarified that Homan would be coordinating ICE operations and ongoing fraud investigations in the state, although she did not comment on whether there’s been a loss of confidence in current leadership.
The tensions in Minnesota escalated following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Preti by Border Patrol agents. According to federal authorities, Preti, an ICU nurse, approached agents brandishing a gun and attempted to disarm them.
This incident follows another shooting where ICE agents fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier. The deaths have ignited significant criticism and anger from many who argue that the government’s aggressive actions are leading to unnecessary violence.
Leavitt remarked that Homan has “the full trust and confidence of the president” as he heads to Minnesota, emphasizing his role in rebuilding trust with local officials amid the unrest.
She referred to an old Washington Post piece highlighting Homan’s past accomplishments in immigration enforcement, indicating a longstanding recognition of his work in law enforcement.
Trump shared on his platform that he had a productive conversation with Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz, who stressed the need for local governments to collaborate with federal authorities. He mentioned, “The governor respectfully understood and was supportive of having Tom Homan in position.”
Governor Walz described the call as meaningful, advocating for a thorough investigation into the Minneapolis shooting and a reduction of federal presence in Minnesota. He arranged for the Department of Criminal Enforcement to independently investigate, reminding Trump of the state’s respect for federal detainees.
