As unrest continues in Minneapolis, users on Bluesky, a social media platform that has gained traction among liberal circles, are increasingly voicing their outrage against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Initially developed by Twitter Inc., Bluesky was established as a separate entity after Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, positioning itself as a more left-leaning alternative. Recently, the platform has seen a surge in posts, many from anonymous accounts, openly calling for violence against ICE agents following the shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good.
Some users are vocally advocating for ICE agents to be fired upon immediately. One account, FlipFreshplane, bluntly stated, “Shoot ICE in front of me. I said what I said.” Another user, calling himself Brett, expressed frustration with a post asking whether this was a pivotal moment against ICE, urging fellow users to “shoot them on sight” and take action. Reflecting a growing sentiment, a user named Dennis added, “I’ve seen too many videos of ICE Nazis brutalizing and killing us!” suggesting that extreme measures might soon become a form of self-defense.
Many of these comments assert that shooting ICE officers aligns with some interpretation of constitutional rights. A user going by Jericho 8 suggested that since ICE agents are typically masked and not identifiable, taking deadly action against them is justified under current political climates. “Republicans are pro-Second Amendment lunatics… so they’ll understand,” he quipped. Others take this viewpoint further, calling staging armed resistance a fundamental responsibility of citizens to defend against tyranny.
Some posts invoking violence against ICE even appear to precede the outcry triggered by the recent shooting. For instance, even several months ago, users were making threatening statements about the actions they felt justified against ICE agents. Bluesky’s community guidelines explicitly prohibit any content that promotes violence or serious harm. However, a cursory review revealed that only a few posts received any warnings of being threatening, raising questions about how the platform monitors such content.
Despite the chaos surrounding this situation, Bluesky remains a popular haven for those disillusioned by mainstream platforms, with users increasingly voicing extreme opinions on high-stakes issues like immigration enforcement.
