Trump Engages with Minneapolis Mayor amid Unrest
President Donald Trump recently mentioned that he had a “very good” phone conversation with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, highlighting ongoing tensions in the city as riots spurred by federal immigration actions persisted.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that there would be increased federal collaboration with local officials. “I just had a very nice phone conversation with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey,” he wrote. “A lot of progress is being made! Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow to continue the discussion. Thank you for your attention to this issue!”
Mayor Frey later shared his perspective on the call, emphasizing his stance regarding federal immigration initiatives and the conditions under which the city would cooperate with both state and federal enforcement.
He stated, “I spoke with President Trump today and thanked him for the conversation. I expressed how much Minneapolis has benefited from our immigrant community and made it clear that my primary demand was that Operation Metro Surge must end.” Frey noted that the president acknowledged the need for change in the current approach.
He elaborated that some federal agents would begin leaving Minneapolis and stressed, “The City of Minneapolis will continue to cooperate with state and federal law enforcement regarding actual criminal investigations, but will not participate in unconstitutional arrests of our neighbors or the enforcement of federal immigration laws.”
Frey underscored the importance of holding violent criminals accountable for their actions, not based on their backgrounds.
He declared they would work across government levels to enhance community safety, stating he would meet with Homan the following day to discuss future steps.
This social media update came shortly after President Trump’s conversation with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz regarding the unrest fueled by federal immigration operations.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt commented on the discussion, noting Trump’s desire to empower local law enforcement amidst the chaos.
Levitt criticized Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, asserting that their actions encouraged anti-ICE sentiment, which allegedly contributed to fatalities involving law enforcement this month. She mentioned that Trump seeks a swift resolution to the turmoil and delineated a clear plan for reinstating order, starting with the extradition of undocumented individuals who are incarcerated or have outstanding warrants.
Moreover, Trump urged local police to assist federal agencies in transferring arrested undocumented individuals and tracking down crime suspects. Levitt reiterated the administration’s intent, saying, “We want cops to be cops.”
