State Lawmaker’s Trip Amid Winter Storm Faces Criticism

A state representative seeking a Congressional seat is encountering backlash after he left New York just before Winter Storm Fern hit his district. He traveled to the Twin Cities for what he described as a “solidarity” visit.

New York State Rep. Mika Lasher (D) took a flight to Minneapolis following a violent incident in which ICE agents shot and killed nurse Alex Jeffrey Preti during a confrontation with protesters.

As a major snowstorm blanketed New York City with approximately a foot of snow, Lasher shared a video from Minneapolis on social media. This was after Governor Kathy Hochul had declared a state of emergency for the city days prior.

“The people here are wonderful. This city is fantastic,” Lasher remarked, as he vies for Jerry Nadler’s seat, which encompasses Manhattan.

“It’s crucial for us to stand in solidarity with the people of Minneapolis to address what’s happening here… They appreciate the support. They want to know we’re on their side. And we are,” he added.

However, some residents, like Upper West Side local Hank Sheinkopf, expressed discontent with Lasher’s decision to leave. “Micah should be helping residents shovel the snow,” he said. “New York needs local officials during a blizzard, not Minnesota.”

One Minnesota Democratic activist criticized Lasher’s intentions, suggesting they seemed more like a publicity stunt. “It’s pure pandering. Is he really here to help or just for a photo op?” questioned Kristin Schuette, who is also running for a state representative position in a Minneapolis suburb. “If it weren’t for his Congressional run, would he have come here?”

Conversely, a Democratic official from New York viewed the trip as a strategic move for Lasher amidst a crowded primary race. “Visiting Minneapolis was a smart decision for him—especially right now,” the official stated, requesting anonymity. “Both progressives and mainstream Democrats are furious about the shooting.”

Lasher defended his actions, highlighting the positive reception he received from prominent Minnesota politicians.

“Micah, we truly appreciate you coming and sharing your support for our community. It means a lot to have backing from across the country,” Congressman Jamie Long expressed.

Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy also thanked him for his solidarity.

During his trip, Lasher attended vigils and protests, and met with local officials in Columbia Heights, a place recently impacted by an ICE arrest involving a young child.

This follows another shocking incident earlier this month, where 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was also shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis.

“After two ICE killings and ongoing fear in the community, I felt it was essential for me to stand with the people here,” Lasher shared on Monday night. “I urge fellow Congress members and everyone else who can contribute, to come out and help in any way possible. Our Congressional offices support constituents daily, and we’ll be heading back to Albany tomorrow.”
