Mayor Appoints New Agency Leaders in NYC
On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani introduced three new appointees to lead significant city agencies, although the newcomers offered minimal insight into their forthcoming agendas.
Yume Hokusei has been named as the director of city administrative services, Sharn Goodwin is now the Director of Probation, and Lisa Garcia takes on the role of Director of Environmental Protection.
“These individuals demonstrate a strong commitment to service and a focus on the needs of this city,” Mamdani remarked at a press conference held at City Hall.
When reporters sought clarity on their plans, the new officials were vague, providing little detail on their strategies or priorities.
Mamdani noted that Hokusei, who previously worked under former Mayors Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams, requires time to acclimate to her new position before outlining her objectives.
In response to inquiries about investigating questionable city rental agreements, the Mayor stated, “I expect a lot from the new commissioner, but I’ll also allow some time for her to dig into certain questions.”
“We’re going to conduct a thorough review,” Hokusei assured.
Garcia, who served at the federal Environmental Protection Agency during President Joe Biden’s administration, emphasized the importance of determining their path moving forward.
“In the coming days, we aim to get a clearer picture of the situation, and I believe some of our ongoing capital projects will progress,” she stated, highlighting the need for improvements related to climate impact.
Goodwin previously held the position of Deputy Commissioner of the Probation Department until retiring in 2024 after three decades with the department.
When asked about addressing nepotism from the Adams administration within her department, she replied, “Once I step into the role, I will look into what I’ve heard, but I can’t confirm everything that’s being reported.”
“We just need a bit of time to evaluate and understand what needs attention,” she concluded.
