Protests Erupt at Minnesota State Capitol Over Immigration Policies
On Tuesday, a large group of protesters filled the Minnesota State Capitol, their voices resonating through the corridors near Governor Tim Walz’s office, as frustration over federal immigration enforcement reached a peak.
The demonstrations were spurred by widespread outrage following the recent fatal shooting of a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis. Activists demanded accountability and called for changes to enforcement practices.
In the afternoon, around 200 protesters gathered at the Capitol, shouting phrases like “ICE leave now!” and “Do your job!” They initially planned a slow march to the governor’s office, which turned out to be peaceful.
Some attendees chanted, “Whose home is this… our home?” and echoed sentiments like, “What do you want? The price. When do you want it? Now” along with “No one is illegal… power to the people.”
Several protesters held signs demanding “Justice for Justice,” featuring an image of Renee Goode, who was shot by federal agents earlier this month. Others called for justice for Alex Preti, another person killed by federal officers just last week.
Earlier, President Donald Trump mentioned that he spoke with Governor Walz amid the escalating tensions over Preti’s death.
In a related development, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described a “productive conversation” with Tom Homan, the White House border czar, stressing concerns about Operation Metro Surge. Frey emphasized that the city does not enforce federal immigration laws and that community trust is essential for public safety.
