Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Struggles on Paramount+
As Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has launched, it’s garnered a fair share of both praise and scrutiny. Its reception on Paramount+, where it is supposed to shine, has been surprisingly lackluster.
In a recent review, it was awarded a commendable score—almost perfect, really—highlighting its potential. The review described it as a “best example” of how Star Trek can thrive in today’s media landscape, calling it “comprehensive, compelling, and innovative.”
However, as we approach Episode 3, it seems to be struggling to make an impact. It’s currently absent from the Paramount+ streaming chart, which is quite shocking given the lack of competition for viewers’ attention this month.
Instead of engaging with new content like Starfleet Academy, subscribers appear to be opting for classic reruns, including shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS. This is quite a turn for a series that anticipated strong viewer engagement, supported by its notable promotional efforts and critical acclaim.
This brings to mind a similar situation with Solo: A Star Wars Story, which faced an unexpected backlash at the box office. Before that point, it seemed almost impossible for a Star Wars film to fail. Solo’s disappointing performance prompted serious reflections by Disney and Lucasfilm, leading to significant changes in their movie release strategy.
Star Trek, like its counterpart, has a dedicated fan base willing to endure a lot to bask in its universe. Yet, the inability of Starfleet Academy to find its footing feels particularly monumental, especially since a fan-favorite franchise isn’t performing well on its own platform.
The show’s “Free Premiere” was met with indifference on YouTube, with only about 238,000 views after over a week. The like-to-dislike ratio is notably grim as well—8.6K likes against a staggering 30K dislikes.
Despite its rough start, Paramount is expressing optimism. They’ve hinted at a second season renewal even before the first wraps up. It leaves one wondering, though—will that confidence be rewarded, or will the series continue to falter?
It’s a curious situation that has even led some viewers to look away in frustration. There’s certainly a lot to unpack here as we wait to see how this saga unfolds.
