Trump Addresses Border Patrol Shake-Up and Minnesota Shootings

President Donald Trump stated that the removal of Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino from his position in Minnesota isn’t a “reversal,” while expressing his sorrow over the recent shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Preti involving federal agents. “It was terrible. Both were terrible,” Trump shared during an exclusive chat on “The Will Cain Show” on Tuesday. “I don’t want to see it, I don’t want to see it.”

In the interview with Will Cain, Trump tackled the unrest surrounding Minnesota’s immigration leadership following the two deaths that ignited protests and confrontations between law enforcement and citizens. He elaborated on why he chose to let go of Bovino, opting for “border czar” Tom Homan instead.

President Trump described Bovino as a “very good, but very eccentric type of guy.” He suggested that, while eccentricity can have its benefits, perhaps it wasn’t the right fit for the current situation in Minnesota.

He praised Homan, saying, “Tom is great. Tom is a tough guy, but from what I’ve seen over the years, he gets along well with governors and mayors.” Not everyone has that ability, as some individuals prefer simply to do their job without outside interference.

Trump mentioned his aim to “de-escalate” immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, though he firmly stated these changes shouldn’t be seen as a withdrawal from enforcement. He emphasized, “I don’t think it’s a setback. It’s a small change.” He added, “We’re going to loosen up a little bit.”

Homan spoke with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who have criticized the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies. They both agreed on the necessity of ongoing dialogue to address these issues.

Trump further clarified his conversation with Walz, noting, “I couldn’t have had a better conversation.” He expressed surprise at how different Walz seemed compared to his public persona, stating, “I can’t believe that’s the same person I see on TV… because we had a very good conversation that made a lot of sense.”

On the deaths of Good and Preti, Trump acknowledged the impact of Good’s family background on him, noting that her father was a Trump supporter. “It just feels bad.” He also raised questions about Preti’s firearm possession, specifically why he had a handgun, calling it “unusual.” “I don’t like the fact that he carried a loaded gun and had two magazines,” Trump remarked.

Despite the mourning for the two individuals, Trump has not softened his rhetoric regarding what he terms “paid insurrectionists” who protested his administration’s immigration initiatives in Minnesota. He described these agitators as “not normal” and reiterated that the success of his administration often gets less media coverage than its failures.

He conveyed confidence in his approach to tackling drug trafficking and other crime-related issues, noting that if even one mistake occurs, it captures the headlines. Additionally, he insinuated that the protests may serve as a distraction from alleged wrongdoing within the state.

Responding to Will Cain’s inquiry about the protests acting as a diversion, Trump affirmed, “I’ve said that since day one. It’s a distraction.”
