Mike McCarthy shares his thoughts on whether he would like to have Aaron Rodgers return to the Steelers

McCarthy Open to Aaron Rodgers Reunion with Steelers

Mike McCarthy appears receptive to the idea of Aaron Rodgers rejoining him in Pittsburgh. When asked about the potential for Rodgers’s return after their long stint together in Green Bay, the Steelers’ new head coach responded succinctly, saying, “Absolutely, I don’t see why not.”

Considering the emotional journey of the game, McCarthy added, “It’s crucial for players at this stage of their careers to take a step back and relax.” He emphasized how much the commitment to football means to them, suggesting that some time away could be beneficial. Having recently watched the Steelers play, he expressed appreciation for Rodgers’s contributions to the team.

Rodgers’s performance this past season was notable—completing 65.7% of his passes with 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and merely seven interceptions—bringing the Steelers to a 10-7 record and securing the AFC North title.

However, the 42-year-old quarterback’s future remains uncertain. After the Steelers’ playoff loss to the Texans, he was hesitant to disclose plans for his 22nd NFL season. “I’m not going to make an emotional decision,” he stated, reflecting on how enjoyable the year has been despite its challenges.

This week, Steelers owner Art Rooney II hinted that a decision from Rodgers could come in the “next month or so” during an interview, leaving fans hopeful. However, earlier comments from Rooney suggested that the sudden exit of former coach Mike Tomlin might complicate matters.

Following McCarthy’s hiring, reports indicated this choice wasn’t directly linked to bringing Rodgers back. Rooney remarked that while they are uncertain about Rodgers’s intentions, the new head coach’s arrival shouldn’t negatively impact their chances of reuniting with the quarterback.
