Bill Belichick’s Unique Rules According to Julian Edelman

During the New England Patriots’ dynasty, head coach Bill Belichick created a rather memorable set of rules. Former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman recently recalled what he found to be the most striking of these guidelines. He mentioned this while promoting a sleep aid in August.

“One rule that stands out is the ban on anything flammable in your hotel room,” Edelman explained. He added, “Whether it’s incense or sage—if it can burn, it’s not allowed.” This little tidbit might seem extreme, but it reflects Belichick’s meticulous nature.

But it wasn’t just about what players could have in their rooms. Belichick also had specific requirements for what players chewed during the game. As he put it in 2017, “We personalize everything we do. We’ll train players of all sizes, from 185 to 350 pounds.”

Edelman seemed to appreciate this focused approach, stating that it felt like a sophisticated but unobtrusive method of maintaining food discipline. His experience with the team’s nutritionist, Ted Harper, showcased how detailed this process was. They even adjusted his diet based on data from GPS units tracking his practices—so precisely, in fact, that they had to remove mustard and almonds based on his blood type.

Belichick’s strategy and rigor contributed significantly to the Patriots’ five Super Bowl wins and numerous playoff appearances from 2000 to 2023. Under his guidance, the team achieved 266 regular-season victories and dominated the AFC East, clinching 17 titles. Yet, despite such accomplishments, it appears he won’t enter the Hall of Fame on the first ballot this time.

A source cited by ESPN revealed that Belichick is baffled and disappointed by this outcome, feeling that it doesn’t properly reflect his achievements. “Politics has played a role here,” the source mentioned, implying that this may not be solely about his coaching record.

Looking ahead, the Patriots are set to return to the Super Bowl, now under coach Mike Vrabel, facing off against the Seahawks in a rematch from the memorable Super Bowl 49, where Edelman played a crucial role in securing the victory. It’s certainly a thrilling time for both the team and its fans.
