Spotify Strengthens Its Dominance in the Music Industry

On Wednesday, Spotify shared that it represents around one-third of the total revenue in the recorded music industry, reinforcing its status as the leading music streaming service globally.

The company’s revenue has seen a significant increase, having doubled since 2017. In fact, last year, Spotify’s payments to the music industry reached record levels for a retailer.

According to Charlie Hellman, Spotify’s head of music, “Spotify currently accounts for about 30% of recorded music revenue. Our payments have risen by more than 10% in the past year while other revenue streams in the industry grew by nearly 4%.” He emphasized that Spotify has become the main contributor to revenue growth in the industry for 2025.

Hellman pointed out that Spotify has paid over $11 billion to the music industry, marking the largest annual payment ever by a retailer, bringing total payments close to $70 billion.

This impressive achievement enables numerous artists to earn significant six-figure incomes from Spotify alone, with independent artists and labels making up half of all royalty payments.

In his remarks, Hellman also mentioned future initiatives and products, such as enhancing discoverability in what is a crowded market, addressing the misuse of artificial intelligence against artists, and finding ways to boost ticket sales for live shows.

“Our main goal is to help new music and emerging artists stand out and connect meaningfully with their audience,” Hellman stated. With over 100,000 new songs launched daily, competing with a vast history of recorded music creates an exceptional challenge for new artists trying to build an initial fan base.

Spotify also plans to revise its authentication and song credit systems to safeguard artist identities as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent.

“AI is often exploited by bad actors to clutter streaming platforms with low-quality content to mislead the system and appropriate royalties from genuine artists,” Hellman noted. In response, Spotify will introduce enhancements to its artist verification processes and song credit systems.

Moreover, the streaming platform will introduce SongDNA, which aims to let fans learn more about the creators behind their favorite tracks, as well as unveil new tools to convert listeners into concert attendees. A human music editor will also be integrated to complement algorithm-driven playlist suggestions.
