Trump’s Responsibility for Attack on Ilhan Omar Discussed on CNN
CNN anchor Abby Phillip stated that former President Donald Trump is accountable for the attack against Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) at a Minnesota City Hall event on Tuesday.
During the broadcast of “CNN Newsnight,” Phillip highlighted that Omar has faced numerous aggressive attacks from Trump, and she questioned former Minnesota attorney general candidate Jim Schultz (R) about whether the president should reach out to Omar following the incident.
Previously, Trump had referred to Omar in derogatory terms during a cabinet meeting in December, accusing her and other Somali immigrants of complaining after moving to the United States.
“What should the president do? Should he call her? Should someone say, ‘Enough is enough, we need to tone it down,’ especially regarding her?” Phillip queried.
Schultz agreed that a call could be a good idea but emphasized that the decision is ultimately Trump’s. He expressed that, in his hypothetical role as president, he would definitely call Omar to ensure she was okay.
Phillip responded pointedly, questioning whether Trump would ever acknowledge his role in inciting such abuse, saying, “Can I have it?”
Schultz reiterated the importance of being supportive and caring, irrespective of personal disagreements, stating, “We should pick up the phone and care about the person on the other end.”
The White House did not respond to inquiries regarding the situation.
During a town hall meeting on Tuesday evening, Omar was attacked when a man sprayed an unknown substance at her. Security intervened swiftly, and the assailant was apprehended. Although Omar seemed shaken, she remained largely unharmed.
In a moment of defiance, Omar declared, “We’re going to keep going. These bastards won’t get away with this,” as the audience reacted.
The attacker was identified as Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, who has been charged with third-degree assault. The incident occurred during Omar’s first in-person town hall of the year in north Minneapolis.
Omar’s aide commented on the offensive smell of the substance used in the attack, urging her to seek medical attention.
