Rubio Addresses NATO and U.S. Resources in Senate Hearing

During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized to NATO allies that while the United States is “the richest country in the world,” it doesn’t possess unlimited resources. This statement came in the context of discussing U.S. military operations targeting former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro earlier this month.

Rubio pointed out, “We are not solely focused on Europe. There are defense requirements in the Western Hemisphere as well. The Indo-Pacific region also has ongoing security needs and will continue to require our attention.” When asked by Senator Jeanne Shaheen about the United States’ benefits from NATO, Rubio acknowledged that the alliance is beneficial but mentioned, “NATO’s obligations should be reexamined.”

He further remarked, “This concern isn’t new to this administration. Many past presidents have raised issues related to this, though I feel this president has voiced them more emphatically.” Rubio also reflected on the state of Venezuela before Maduro’s capture on January 3, explaining that the nation had been governed by indicted drug traffickers who served as a base for opponents and enemies worldwide.

Additionally, Rubio made the case that the Venezuelan situation has improved since recent military actions, noting, “The condition in Venezuela is certainly better today than it was four weeks ago.” However, he cautioned that the complexities of the ongoing project mean that challenges remain. “It’s not going to be simple, considering we’re dealing with individuals who have lived most of their lives in, let’s say, less-than-ideal circumstances,” he added.
