Former Rick Scott staffer enters busy House GOP race in strong Republican Florida district

Former Staffer Announces Congressional Candidacy in Florida

A former aide to Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott, Austin Rogers, has declared his candidacy for Congress, according to reports. He’s officially vying for Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, a strong Republican area that includes parts of the state. This seat is currently held by Congressman Neil Dunn, who is retiring at the end of this year.

In his announcement, Rogers highlighted the district’s conservative values, drawing on the influence of both President Donald Trump and Sen. Scott. He stated, “Strong leadership is important, as President Trump and Senator Scott have demonstrated.” He went on to share a bit of his personal connection to the area, mentioning his childhood experiences and love for the community. “I grew up here in the 2nd District, fished in this bay, hunted in these woods,” he reflected. Rogers expressed a desire for change, suggesting that Washington needs more “warriors” ready to confront government inefficiencies.

Rogers has experience, having served as general counsel in Scott’s Senate office, which he believes has equipped him with a solid understanding of congressional operations. He mentioned, “I’ve drafted legislation, conducted Congressional hearings, and led investigations to hold the left accountable.” However, it’s worth noting that Scott’s campaign has indicated there are no current plans for him to endorse Rogers in this race.

Interestingly, Rogers’ announcement notably omitted any mention of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a significant figure in the state’s Republican hierarchy, even while referencing Tallahassee, the state capital.

Rogers, a father to two children with another on the way, was raised in his district but spent some time working in Washington, D.C., before returning home with his family. Meanwhile, the field of candidates is becoming increasingly competitive to replace Dunn, a former Army major and surgeon who first secured the seat in 2016.

Currently, three Republicans and three Democrats have already entered the race, making Rogers the fourth GOP participant. Notable candidates include Evan Power, the Florida Republican Party’s state chairman, and businessman Keith Gross, who has previously hinted at a future challenge against Scott.

Interestingly, Dunn joins numerous members of Congress announcing their retirement during this congressional term, with a total of 28 Republicans and 21 Democrats deciding to step away, reflecting a significant trend in recent political landscapes.
