Another thrilling moment unfolds in the Champions League match

Benfica’s Historic Moment in UEFA Champions League

On Wednesday, Benfica achieved a remarkable feat in the UEFA Champions League. With a narrow lead over Real Madrid, 3-2, they were just one goal away from securing their spot in the knockout stages. As the game entered an unexpected extra five minutes, chaos ensued in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Benfica earned a free kick near Real Madrid’s goal, offering them a vital opportunity. The kick was perfectly placed, and surprisingly, Benfica’s goalkeeper, Anatoly Trubin, who had ventured forward for support, managed to head the ball into the net.

Trubin’s celebration was exuberant, even as his teammates showered him with joy. Under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, Benfica advanced in the tournament, surprisingly finishing in 24th place.

Reflecting on the moment, Trubin remarked, “I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do. Then I saw everyone urging me to go forward, including the coach. I don’t know… I’m still processing it. Scoring is new for me; I’m 24, and this is unbelievable.”

This goal had an additional implication; it pushed Mourinho’s old team, Real Madrid, out of the top eight, which automatically qualified for the round of 16.

Mourinho shared his thoughts: “We were unsure if 3-2 would suffice. When the free kick was awarded, we pushed Trubin forward. This win is not just historical; it’s crucial from a prestige perspective.” According to UEFA, Trubin became the fifth goalkeeper to score in Champions League finals, marking the first instance since 2023 with Ivan Proveder’s goal for Lazio.

“We were confident he could pull it off,” Mourinho added. “Just weeks ago, he almost scored against Porto. It’s clear he has the potential. It’s all about the quality of the pass, and it was an incredible goal.”

While Benfica might not ring a bell for some casual soccer fans, they have a storied presence in the Primeira Liga, currently sitting in third place and last winning the league title in the 2022-23 season.
