Coroner in South Carolina confirms 2 deaths due to hypothermia from winter storm

Winter Storm Impacts South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) has reported a second death linked to last weekend’s winter storm, amid preparations for another wave of extreme weather. An 83-year-old woman from Lexington County succumbed to hypothermia while outdoors, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday. This follows the earlier report of a 96-year-old woman from Greenwood County who also died from hypothermia.

Both individuals’ deaths were verified by their respective county coroners, although the identity of the 83-year-old woman hasn’t been released yet.

Presidential Action and State Emergency Declarations

Before the storm hit, President Trump had authorized a federal disaster declaration in response to a request from South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. This declaration allows federal resources to supplement local efforts. According to the governor’s office, a total of 46 counties now have access to necessary federal personnel and equipment.

On January 24, President Trump noted: “I have authorized a state of emergency declaration in response to the historic winter storm heading toward our great states of South Carolina and Virginia.” He assured residents that they would work together with FEMA to keep them safe and provide needed assistance.

Wider Impact of the Storm

The storm has not only affected South Carolina. It swept through a large section of the country, from New Mexico to New England, bringing significant snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain, resulting in subzero temperatures across many regions. Reports indicate that by Saturday, numerous states (at least 12) had received emergency declarations from the President.

In tragic circumstances, a man in Tennessee suffered a heart attack while shoveling snow, highlighting the storm’s serious impacts. While some areas recover, many states are gearing up for another round of severe weather. Forecasts suggest a significant new storm may hit the Carolinas, with places like Massachusetts and Cape Cod expected to experience heavy snowfall and high winds.

It’s a challenging time for many residents as they navigate the harsh winter conditions.
