Town Approves Purchase of Luxury Mansion for Public Beach Parking
A charming Long Island town has just gotten the green light to move forward with a plan to demolish a lavish mansion worth $26 million situated in a billionaires’ enclave. The intention? To convert the space into a public beach parking lot.
On Tuesday, the Southampton City Council unanimously approved the acquisition of the three-story, 11-bedroom estate on Meadow Lane, which is owned by Francis Katz.
Southampton City Attorney Jim Burke commented, “While it’s definitely a pricey deal, it’s not every day a town has the chance to acquire and preserve oceanfront land. This will provide great recreational options for residents and align with coastal restoration goals on various levels.”
The Town Board’s decision means that Town Supervisor Maria Moore can officially sign the contract with Katz and finalize the purchase.
Officials have indicated that this agreement will introduce environmental protections to surrounding marine habitats that were lacking during the property’s private ownership. It seems, while the mansion won’t be missed, the benefits to local ecology could be significant.
Jacqueline Fenlon, Community Preservation Fund manager for Southampton, noted at a Board meeting, “This property is special because it holds coastal dunes, beaches, and helps preserve a vital stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It will also enable public access to the beach, opening up passive and active recreational activities for the community.”
The funding for this purchase is being drawn from the Community Preservation Fund, which relies on a 2% real estate transfer tax aimed at supporting land conservation, water quality improvement, and park acquisitions.
According to city records, this purchase marks Southampton’s second-largest acquisition through the Community Preservation Fund, noted for achieving the highest price per acre.
While town officials have stated that the plans to demolish the mansion and repurpose the property as a parking lot are still a few months away, property records show its listed price at $27.5 million. Interestingly, Fenlon mentioned that two independent appraisals confirmed that the sale price is fair, suggesting the town may benefit from this vibrant estate.
Meadow Lane itself is nestled in an exclusive neighborhood in the Hamptons, where the billionaire line ends at a public helipad, often used by helicopter-savvy New Yorkers.
Katz’s attorney, Carl Benincasa, expressed that Katz’s family is thrilled about the future potential of the property. “This parcel has held significant value for them, and they’re genuinely excited about its future focus on environmental conservation and public enjoyment,” he stated.
