Iran promises to carry out live-fire military exercises in an important sea route.

On Thursday, Iran announced plans for live-fire military exercises next week in a crucial maritime area where around 20% of the world’s oil shipments transit. This announcement came just two days after the U.S. revealed its own military drills in the region.

The Islamic Republic has issued a warning to maritime vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. John Gambrell, who reports on Gulf and Iranian affairs for The Associated Press, noted that Iran’s message indicated it would conduct “naval fire” exercises on both Sunday and Monday.

This military display from Tehran is seen as a counter to the increasing American military presence in the Middle East, particularly following the arrival of President Trump’s “massive fleet.”

Central Air Forces, part of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), stated that their exercises aim to showcase its capabilities in deploying and sustaining combat air power in the area.

These military drills also emphasize U.S. partnerships in the region and response times, especially as tensions escalate between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s severe crackdown on anti-regime protests.

The specifics regarding the dates and locations of the U.S. exercises haven’t been disclosed, raising questions about whether these activities will overlap with those organized by Iran.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and its strike group arrived in the region just days ago, highlighting ongoing discussions in the Trump administration regarding military options against Iran.

In addition to the carrier, the U.S. has deployed several fighter jets, including F-15E Strike Eagles, noted as the same aircraft involved in the 2024 attack on Iran, as reported by the Washington Post. The USS Delbert D. Black, a guided-missile destroyer, also reached the Middle East on Thursday, increasing the total number of American warships in the area to ten.

On Wednesday, President Trump called for Iran to enter negotiations for a “fair and equitable deal” regarding its nuclear program, while indicating that more military assets would be en route to the region.

He expressed hopes on Truth Social that Iran would be willing to “come to the table” to discuss a mutually agreeable arrangement to prevent the development of nuclear weapons.
