Voter for Pro Football Hall of Fame Discusses Reason for Not Selecting Bill Belichick

Sportswriter Explains Vote Against Belichick’s Hall of Fame Induction

A sportswriter, who opted not to support former NFL coach Bill Belichick’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is sharing his reasons for this decision.

Vahe Gregorian from the Kansas City Star mentioned in a recent column that he was among the 11 voters who did not back Belichick’s candidacy.

Gregorian clarified that his vote wasn’t influenced by past allegations against Belichick, which many believe could have disqualified him from consideration. Instead, he pointed to the voting process itself, stating, “If the unusual selection dynamics allowed for a straightforward yes or no vote, I undoubtedly would have voted for him this year. I think he deserves to be in Canton in 2026, his first year eligible.”

However, he acknowledged that isn’t how the voting works. Following an ESPN report that fueled confusion and speculation, it was revealed that Belichick would not be part of the 2026 Hall of Fame class, according to four anonymous sources.

Gregorian expressed that the voting rules compelled him to choose among other deserving senior candidates: Ken Anderson, Roger Craig, and LC Greenwood. He emphasized that all three have long been overlooked for induction.

While he believes Belichick will ultimately get inducted, Gregorian admitted surprise at how the situation unfolded this time around. He understands the backlash surrounding Belichick’s lack of support in the initial round.

“To be honest, I can see why people would feel frustrated that he isn’t in sooner,” he stated.

He expressed a strong belief that this might be a critical moment, advocating for a change in the current voting system. “I recognize the possibility of a lost cause within the system, which is why I hope it’s time for the Hall to consider revising the process,” he said.

Gregorian also noted that while accusations of “cheating” were discussed, they didn’t impact his vote. He reaffirmed that he didn’t oppose Belichick; rather, he chose to support the three other candidates he felt deserved recognition.

In conclusion, he emphasized that his sense of duty to these candidates outweighed his feelings about Belichick’s situation. As for Belichick’s fans, many have called for transparency in voting. It remains uncertain whether others will follow Gregorian’s example in shedding light on their voting choices.
