Treasury Secretary Reflects on Notable Predecessor and Administration Tensions

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently addressed his reputation for stirring up controversy during his time in the Trump administration, acknowledging his famous predecessor for establishing a “precedent.” In a chat on the “Ruthless” podcast, he was jokingly asked about his challenging role as a cabinet member.

Co-host Josh Holmes humorously noted, “You may be the only cabinet secretary to have scored several knockouts during your term,” to which Bessent responded with a light-hearted reference to Alexander Hamilton, saying, “Well, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton has precedent.”

Another co-host, Comforterly Smug, piped in, “Apparently you win the battle,” and Bessent agreed, nodding before steering the conversation elsewhere.

Hamilton is well-known for his infamous duel with former Vice President Aaron Burr, which ended fatally for Hamilton. Last year, Bessent reportedly faced conflicts with various Trump administration figures, including a notable clash with Elon Musk, who was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. They supposedly had a heated argument over the leadership of the National Tax Agency that escalated to a physical confrontation.

There are claims that Bessent confronted Housing Secretary Bill Pulte, allegedly making threats like, “I’m going to punch you in the face,” during a discussion. His contentious exchanges also extended to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who recently attracted attention for humor related to knee pads at the World Economic Forum.

Bessent, who identifies as gay, made a quip directed at Newsom, suggesting that the governor had brought the knee pads himself, saying, “I don’t know, but who knows,” while joking with his podcast co-host.
