Jordan Chiles wins appeal in Swiss court to continue Olympic medal case

Legal Victory for Jordan Chiles

American gymnast Jordan Chiles has recently triumphed in a legal battle, more than 17 months after losing an Olympic medal.

On Thursday, Switzerland’s highest court, the Swiss Federal Court, declared that it would allow Chile to appeal. As a result, the case concerning Chile’s bronze medal will be sent back to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a retrial. The court referenced video evidence showing the Chilean coach reviewing the gymnast’s scores within a specific timeframe.

This ruling progresses Chile’s effort to rectify an ongoing dispute that has involved errors leading to the loss of a bronze medal in floor exercise at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Historically, medals have been redistributed primarily due to doping or other types of misconduct. In this situation, though, the controversy stems from evident mistakes made by the sport’s governing body, the International Gymnastics Federation.

The issue centers around a recording of the final match that could potentially lead to a change in the original award. In a past statement, CAS noted that it would consider oral examinations conducted on behalf of Jordan Chiles, particularly in light of the new video evidence.

The appeal from the Chilean side questioning the independence of the arbitration chair was not accepted.

Maurice Hsu, a Chilean legal team member, stated that his client remains determined to secure the bronze medal earned during the Paris Olympics.

Hsu expressed satisfaction over the Swiss Federal Supreme Court’s ruling, suggesting it corrects prior injustices and supports Jordan’s rightful claim to her bronze medal based on “conclusive” video evidence.

There’s an acknowledgment that the unusual time constraints and lack of prior notice had hindered Jordan’s ability to present crucial evidence back in August 2024. The focus now is on ensuring she gets a fair chance to defend her position for the bronze medal.

USA Gymnastics also weighed in, expressing anticipation for a fair hearing for Chile, emphasizing the importance of clear evidence regarding the timing of the investigation into Chiles’s scores.

While a date for the new CAS hearing hasn’t been established yet, CAS confirmed its compliance with the court’s ruling, stating that they look forward to reviewing any new evidence that may arise.
