Vikings GM Reflects on Regrets Ahead of Super Bowl Week
As Super Bowl week approaches, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah finds himself reflecting on past decisions with a hint of regret.
During a recent press conference, Adofo-Mensah shared the sleepless nights that followed his choice to let Sam Darnold enter free agency last offseason.
“We’ve had quite a few late nights, and honestly, there’s always a bit of uncertainty with these kinds of decisions,” Adofo-Mensah noted.
His remarks are especially intriguing given that the Vikings allowed Darnold, who had a standout season, to leave while they moved forward with quarterback JJ McCarthy, the team’s first-round pick in 2024.
Darnold went on to sign a hefty three-year, $100 million deal with the Seahawks after being traded for Geno Smith. Remarkably, he is now gearing up for the Super Bowl.
“There are definitely nights when I wake up, staring at the ceiling, thinking back on what I was considering at that moment. It’s all too easy to be a hindsight expert,” Adofo-Mensah admitted.
Last season, the Vikings posted a 9-8 record while McCarthy struggled through various challenges, especially following a knee surgery during his rookie year. In contrast, Darnold had led the Vikings to a 14-3 record during his previous season with the team, propelling them into playoff contention.
In a recent NFC Championship clash, Darnold rushed for 346 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Seahawks secure a 31-27 victory over the Rams.
Despite a rocky start to his NFL career, Darnold is now the first quarterback from the much-discussed 2018 draft class to make it to the Super Bowl, outpacing big names like Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield.
Once labeled a bust after being drafted third overall by the Jets, Darnold, known for seeing “ghosts” on the field, has seemingly silenced critics. Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald expressed his happiness for Darnold following the game, acknowledging his growth and success.
As for the Vikings, they are left searching for answers in the offseason, particularly after McCarthy’s struggles and ongoing recovery. There were whispers that they considered signing Aaron Rodgers last year, but ultimately chose to stick with McCarthy, allowing Rodgers to lead the Steelers into the playoffs.
In his limited playing time last season, McCarthy threw for just 1,632 yards, with a disappointing mix of 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions over ten games.
