Trump Warns UK About China Relations

President Trump has expressed concerns to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the potential risks of the UK engaging with China, labeling it “very dangerous.” His comments came during a press interaction at the premier of his documentary about Melania Trump.

Trump’s remarks were in response to a question about Britain’s activities with China. A report indicated that Washington had prior knowledge of Starmer’s visit and its objectives.

Starmer arrived in Beijing earlier this week for an official tour, where he met with Xi Jinping. During their discussions, he emphasized Britain’s desire to cultivate “sophisticated relationships” with countries in Asia.

According to a Chinese state media outlet, Xi expressed optimism that Starmer’s visit would lead to productive cooperation between the two nations, suggesting a phrase in Chinese that signifies “moving forward.”

After meeting Xi, Starmer shared with reporters that China had agreed to allow visa-free travel and reduced duties on whiskey.

On a separate note, footage released showed Starmer reaffirming his goal to develop a “coherent, long-term, comprehensive and strategic” relationship with China at a UK-China business conference in Beijing.

In response to Trump’s cautionary remarks, British Trade Secretary Sir Chris Bryant countered that Trump was mistaken in his views. He argued that Trump has previously claimed friendship with Xi and noted that the former president is planning a visit to China in April.

Starmer is set to leave Shanghai shortly for Japan, where he will attend a meeting and dinner with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Trump’s warnings highlighted that he believes the risks of engaging with China are even greater for Canada, citing difficulties the country has faced.

“Canada is struggling significantly, and I don’t think we can look to China for solutions,” he stated, elaborating on his longstanding familiarity with Xi, while adding a light-hearted note about ice hockey as part of his discourse.
