Twins' top leader Derek Falvey removed in unexpected change

Major Changes for Minnesota Teams

It seems like Friday was a day of significant changes for Minnesota sports teams, with the Twins making a surprising announcement just weeks before spring training.

The Twins revealed that team president Derek Falvey has “mutually” parted ways with the organization. This decision comes at an unusual time, especially since it aligns with the Vikings also firing general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, creating a bit of buzz and perhaps confusion among fans.

In his statement, Falvey mentioned that discussions with executive chairman Tom Pohlad began shortly after the ownership transition. They both felt that it was a good time for a shift in leadership. He expressed that these conversations led to the conclusion that stepping aside was the right move for both him and the organization.

However, it’s a bit odd, isn’t it? To have a top executive leave right before the big spring training? Some folks might feel a little uneasy about this timing. It’s worth noting that, only a week ago, Falvey was actively involved in the team’s media luncheon, highlighting the abrupt nature of his departure.

The change in ownership to Pohlad has likely played a role in this decision. When he took control in December 2025, it marked a new era, and perhaps different visions are now clashing within the organization’s leadership. Currently, it feels like the Twins are without some key players who have contributed to their competitive roster over the last decade.

Falvey initially joined the organization as the chief baseball officer in 2016 and rose through the ranks to president of baseball operations in 2019, adding business operations to his title this past March. Under his leadership, the Twins enjoyed four postseason appearances and three AL Central Division titles, with the latest in 2023.

In the meantime, General Manager Jeremy Zoll will continue leading baseball operations, while Pohlad will oversee interim operations until a new director is appointed.

Pohlad stated that the team’s needs are shifting, and they collectively agreed that a leadership change is necessary for the future. Interestingly, Falvey hasn’t laid out immediate plans for his next steps, mentioning he might focus on family for now.

As for the Twins, they’re coming off a disappointing 70-92 season, finishing fourth in the AL Central Division. They’ve made some moves in the offseason, like hiring former Pirates manager Derek Shelton, but significant improvements seem to be lacking.
