Catherine O’Hara’s Co-Stars Mourn Her Loss at 71

The sudden passing of Catherine O’Hara has left her “Schitt’s Creek” co-stars in mourning. She was 71 years old.

Dan Levy, who created the show and portrayed O’Hara’s son, David, shared on Instagram, “What a gift it has been to dance in the warm light of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for so many years.” He posted a couple of photos of them together.

Reflecting on their bond, he said, “I’ve worked with my father for over 50 years, and Duchess Kate was part of my extended family even before she played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her. I will cherish all the funny memories I was lucky enough to make with her.” His thoughts also extended to O’Hara’s husband, Beau Welch, her sons Matthew and Luke, and the rest of her family.

Jennifer Robertson, who played Jocelyn Schitt, expressed her sadness, stating, “It was a beautiful, magical gift to be in Catherine O’Hara’s orbit. She was an absolute star, and I never understood why people made such a fuss about her.” She added that the loss is felt deeply by all who knew her, sending condolences to the O’Hara family.

O’Hara’s influential career saw her mourned by fellow co-stars from other notable projects like “Beetlejuice” and “Home Alone.” She played Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek,” which ran from 2015 to 2020. The series followed the lives of Johnny (Eugene Levy) and Moira (O’Hara), a wealthy couple who lose everything and find themselves living in a small-town motel.

The show received immense acclaim, sweeping awards at the 2020 Emmys and winning multiple Golden Globe awards the following year.

There had been speculation about a “Schitt’s Creek” movie or reboot. In 2020, O’Hara expressed a desire for a reunion, reminiscing about a fun tour the cast had after the show’s conclusion. “I want to be with everyone again. It would be great to be in a movie,” she noted.

Dan Levy mentioned in 2022 his hope for bringing the cast together someday. “There’s love there. There’s a desire to work together and a desire to tell more stories,” he said.

CAA confirmed O’Hara’s passing, stating that she died at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness. Reports indicated that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call concerning her health, transporting her to a hospital in serious condition. While the cause of death is still unclear, audio from the 911 call revealed she was struggling to breathe in her final moments.
