Mike McCarthy Discusses Aaron Rodgers’ Future

Mike McCarthy has had several talks with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who remains uncertain about his NFL career moving forward.

Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show” recently, McCarthy, the new head coach of the Steelers, mentioned he has reached out to Rodgers, 42, “multiple times” since his hiring on Saturday.

“I’ve spoken with Aaron quite a bit,” McCarthy said. “Like all players with a lengthy career, it’s key to take some time away. That’s a standard part of the process. It’s vital for all these athletes to unwind once the season wraps up, and that’s his mindset too.”

“From our chats, I can’t say much more about whether he’s coming back or not,” he added.

McCarthy has expressed a desire for Rodgers to return to Pittsburgh for the upcoming season.

“I don’t really see any reason why he shouldn’t,” McCarthy responded to a query about wanting the 42-year-old as his quarterback next year.

The two share an extensive history, as McCarthy was Rodgers’ head coach in Green Bay for eleven seasons, which adds a unique dynamic to their discussions.

“This game can get quite emotional due to all the dedication and effort involved. Taking a break is crucial,” McCarthy remarked. He mentioned watching several Steelers games and felt that Rodgers made a positive impact on the team.

In his 21st season in the NFL, Rodgers posted 3,322 passing yards over 16 games with a completion rate of 65.7%, throwing for 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Following the Steelers’ 30-6 loss against the Texans in the wild-card round, which ended their playoff hopes, Rodgers was noncommittal about what lies ahead for him.

“I’m not going to rush into any decisions,” Rodgers stated. “This season has been quite enjoyable. There’s been a lot of challenges, but overall, it’s been a good time. Last year marked a great chapter of my life, and being part of this team has definitely been a highlight.”

“So, it’s unfortunate to be in this position now that the season has concluded.”
