Protests Disrupt Congressman Suozzi’s Speech at Jewish Temple
Activists clashed disruptively during an event at a Jewish temple in New York this week, opposing Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi’s vote for a government spending bill that bolstered funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The group Climate Defiance made their presence known on Wednesday night, interrupting Suozzi’s speech with loud and offensive chants, according to reports. They highlighted their anger over his support for an additional $10 billion directed at ICE funding.
“We confronted Congressman Tom Suozzi,” the group declared on social media. “He was one of seven Democrats who voted to increase ICE funding. This man has blood on his hands, and we won’t let him forget it.”
Footage of the protests has gained millions of views online. The tension is palpable as demonstrators have some rather unusual props—adult diapers and knee pads—mocking his support for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding.
One protester, waving an adult diaper, quipped, “I know you voted to increase funding for ICE, so I wanted to buy you something. These are for when you pee in front of Donald Trump.” Another contributed with knee pads, suggesting they’d be useful while “playing” with Trump.
Interestingly, another protester voiced a personal sentiment, stating, “As a Jew, I’ve never felt safer than with the masked Gestapo on the streets. Thank you, Congressman Suozzi, for your funding of ICE.”
Comedian Walter Masterson attempted to read names of individuals who had died in ICE-related incidents but was reportedly interrupted and ejected during the uproar.
“Nine people have been killed by ICE this month, and you’re throwing me out?” he shouted in frustration.
In light of the backlash, Suozzi has since apologized for supporting the DHS spending plan featuring substantial funding for ICE. This comes after a particularly harsh response from some fellow Democrats following a recent violent incident involving Border Patrol agents.
In a statement, Suozzi acknowledged the concerns of his constituents, reflecting on the vote with some reservation: “I could not see the DHS funding vote as a referendum on ICE’s conduct in Minnesota. I hear the outrage, and I take responsibility.”
He worked with a group of Democrats to help advance the spending bill, which narrowly passed. Notably, both Suozzi and Climate Defiance have yet to respond to further inquiries regarding the protests.
