Don Lemon in court after being arrested for a protest at a Minnesota church: ‘I will continue, I will never give up’

Don Lemon Released After Arrest Following Federal Charges

Journalist Don Lemon was released from federal custody after an appearance in court in Los Angeles. He was released on his own recognizance without having to post bail.

Lemon faces charges related to conspiracy to deprive individuals of their rights and violating the FACE Act, stemming from his involvement in anti-ICE protests at a church in Minnesota. Outside the courthouse, he addressed reporters.

“I’ve dedicated my career to journalism, and I’m not going to stop now,” Lemon stated. “This is a crucial time for independent media to highlight the truth and hold people accountable. I look forward to my day in court.”

He, along with eight other defendants, has been charged with conspiracy to violate religious freedoms and assault in a place of worship, according to court documents.

Lemon’s next court date is set for February 9 in Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, his attorney revealed that Lemon was arrested while covering the Grammy Awards, emphasizing that his journalistic work in Minnesota is consistent with his three-decade career.

“Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents in Los Angeles last night while doing what he has always done: reporting the news,” his attorney, Abby Rowell, expressed.

The exact nature of the charges against Lemon was initially unclear, but authorities confirmed he had been charged with two counts related to conspiracy and the FACE Act. This comes after his participation in a protest at Cities Church in St. Paul on January 18, which investigators labeled a “coordinated attack” against the church. While Lemon insists he was only reporting, prosecutors claim he was part of a conspiracy aiming to disrupt the congregation’s worship.

Federal investigations led to the arrest of several key figures involved in the protests, and multiple activists face charges under the conspiracy against rights statute. Furthermore, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon mentioned that the Justice Department is aware of Lemon’s role.

Amid rising tensions, the arrest was prompted by a viral video showing Lemon engaging with a pastor during a church service, an incident that drew criticism from former President Trump.

“What they did in that church was terrible,” Trump remarked regarding Lemon’s actions.

Though Lemon suggests he had no involvement other than journalistic coverage, he was present before the protests started, indicating that changes were imminent. His attorney further emphasized how the First Amendment protects journalists, implying that this case reflects broader issues within the justice system.

“Don plans to fight these charges vigorously in court,” Rowell stated, pointing out how the focus of the Justice Department should be on more pressing matters.
