Search for Missing Jacob Ryan Concludes

After a lengthy nine-year search, the case of Jacob Ryan has reached a tragic conclusion. On Monday, officials confirmed that skeletal remains discovered in Florida’s Panhandle last year belong to the 19-year-old who was reported missing in February 2016.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday that DNA tests verified the identity of the remains found at Miramar Beach in October 2022. At that time, Ryan was just 19 years old, and his family had been searching for him since he was reported missing.

“This is not the outcome our community wanted,” stated the sheriff’s office. “We hope that Jacob’s family finds peace knowing that he has been found.”

The remains were uncovered by a man clearing brush in Miramar Beach on October 20, 2022. Following this discovery, deputies and the First District Medical Examiner arrived to start identifying the remains.

From 2022 to 2024, the medical examiner worked to identify the victim. However, due to the remains’ condition, the office reached out to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for help.

Authorities noted that environmental conditions over the years made DNA testing particularly challenging. Earlier this month, FDLE confirmed that the remains matched Ryan.

Jacob’s disappearance led to a thorough investigation by the Niceville police, who diligently followed leads but were ultimately unable to find him.

While officials have not disclosed where Ryan was last seen or how he ended up in Walton County, they have stated that the case remains active. “The work does not end here,” the sheriff’s office added, indicating that deputies will continue collaborating with Niceville police to investigate the circumstances of Ryan’s death.
