Protests Erupt in Los Angeles Amid Immigration Tensions

On January 30, 2026, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested several protesters during demonstrations that escalated across the city. Tensions flared as officers were compelled to issue dispersal orders in response to the situation.

Thousands gathered outside City Hall before marching to the Metropolitan Detention Center. The march turned chaotic, with protesters causing property damage, pushing large dumpsters, and blocking access to the facility.

“We had hoped that demonstrations today would be peaceful; however, as you can see in this video, the violent agitators invited LAPD intervention due to their actions,” the LAPD stated.

One individual was arrested for using a slingshot to launch metal projectiles at officers.

The unrest was organized by the grassroots group 50501, which claims that the protests respond to recent incidents involving federal immigration agents. Among those incidents were the deadly shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis this month.

“The national day of action is about fighting back against the escalations that the Trump administration has taken against the American people over the past year,” said Hunter Dunn, a spokesperson for 50501. “Reports about the killings of Porter and Campos, the ones not captured on camera, and others have opened the eyes of many who had previously been unaware of how severe the situation has become.”

During a news conference, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass reported that five protests resulted in arrests for failing to disperse. She called for peaceful demonstrations, suggesting that violence would hinder meaningful change.

“I think the protests are extremely important, but it is equally important for these protests to be peaceful,” Bass said. “That does not impact the administration in any kind of way that is going to bring about any type of change.”

Bass emphasized that the administration may want such protests to occur, hinting at an unsettling notion that heightened unrest could be desirable. She cautioned, “Don’t be surprised if the military reenters our city.”

In light of the violent confrontations, LAPD placed the city on tactical alert, issuing dispersal orders for several streets. While some protesters dispersed, those who remained continued to throw bottles and rocks at law enforcement, leading to officers being pelted with various projectiles.

“Protestors are actively fighting with Officers after multiple dispersal orders were issued. Metropolitan Division is now on scene. Less than lethal has been authorized due to the violence against officers,” LAPD Central Division reported.

Bass also connected the demonstrations to the arrest of former CNN host Don Lemon, charged for conspiracy and violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act during previous protests that disrupted a church service in Minnesota.

“Here you have a world-renowned reporter, Don Lemon. No one questions that he is a reporter, and for him to be arrested for doing his job and to attempt to restrict his ability to do his job was just an egregious misuse of our justice system,” she remarked. “I just wonder how much more our democracy will be eroded with this administration.”

Similar protests were reported nationwide, notably in Minneapolis, where clashes erupted following the immigration-related shootings, resulting in over 50 arrests and temporary business closures in solidarity with Los Angeles.
