Man Arrested for Arson in New York Hotel Fire
A man released on parole earlier this year, following a grand larceny charge, is accused of igniting a fire at a hotel catering to the homeless in New York, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and displacing numerous others, according to local authorities.
Tyler Russell, 24, was taken into custody on Monday and faces six counts of second-degree manslaughter along with one count of arson tied to the incident that occurred at the Knights Inn in Endwell, as reported by the New York State Police.
Emergency responders arrived around 6 a.m. after receiving alerts about a fire at the hotel. Fire crews from Endwell were met with a building engulfed in flames, thick black smoke pouring from the front and visible flames at the back.
The fire quickly escalated, prompting additional fire and law enforcement agencies to be summoned to assist.
Tragically, at least six people lost their lives in this fire, and two others required hospital treatment, though the identities of the victims have not been disclosed as of yet.
In a statement, the Endwell Fire Department expressed their condolences, saying, “First and foremost, our deepest thoughts and constant prayers are with the victims and their families affected by this morning’s tragic events. Please know that our department and the entire community stands with you during this incredibly difficult time.”
The American Red Cross helped those who were evacuated, and a temporary shelter has been established at Vestal United Methodist Church. Meanwhile, the United Way of Broome County has initiated an emergency relief fund for the fire victims, reportedly raising tens of thousands of dollars.
According to estimates from Red Cross volunteers, around 73 individuals were evacuated due to the incident. However, authorities have yet to reveal a potential motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Russell previously spent nearly two years in state prison for grand larceny and had just been released on parole in February, as per prison records cited by local news sources.
Currently, Russell is being held in the Broome County Jail while awaiting arraignment.
The Knights Inn is among several local hotels utilized by the Broome County Department of Social Services for housing homeless individuals.
