Steve Kerr Apologizes for Misstatement Regarding ICE Arrests

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr recently issued an apology after he mistakenly suggested that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were apprehending a 5-year-old child. Kerr, known for his outspoken views on various issues, stated, “They’re not taking out violent criminals…They’re taking 5-year-old kindergarteners and American citizens and detaining people.”

On Friday, following inquiries from an Outkick reporter, Kerr found himself in the awkward position of having to clarify his previous comments.

“I definitely misspoke,” Kerr explained prior to the Warriors’ game against the Detroit Pistons. “I knew ICE was arresting some criminals.” He expressed regrets over his statement, saying he understood that ICE was detaining individuals, including citizens who shouldn’t be in custody. He mentioned the national outrage surrounding these actions had stirred strong emotions across the country.

Kerr also reflected on his recent experience in Minnesota, where he was present for a postponed game after the tragic event involving the shooting of anti-ICE activist Alex Pretti by federal agents. “Being in Minneapolis for those four days was incredibly emotional and powerful. It was a very difficult time for all of us,” he conveyed, emphasizing the heaviness of the situation he had experienced.

“I misspoke. I apologize for the misinformation. I hope everyone who has spoken untruths also takes the time to apologize,” he continued, stating, “I said everything I wanted to say in Minneapolis.”

He added, “My statement was incorrect and I would like to correct it for the record.” Kerr’s remarks likely referred to the case of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, although the Department of Homeland Security disagrees with labeling Ramos’s situation as “under arrest.”

Liam’s father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Ramos, is an undocumented Ecuadorian citizen, and while Liam was in the vehicle during the arrest, he himself was not detained. According to reports, ICE agents cared for the young boy while his father attempted to flee, leaving Liam in the vehicle during severe winter conditions.

Attempts were made to get Liam’s family to assist in his care, but those inside reportedly refused to cooperate, as described by ICE deportation officer Marcos Charles. Currently, Liam and his father are at the Dilley ICE Detention Center in Texas, which accommodates immigrant families facing federal immigration charges.
