Cherished off-duty Nassau County officer dies in accident involving suspected drunk driver on Long Island

A Nassau County police officer, Patricia Espinosa, tragically lost her life early Saturday morning when a suspected drunk driver ran a red light, crashing into her vehicle on a Long Island road, according to authorities.

At around 6:06 a.m., the 42-year-old officer was driving her Alfa Romeo west on Route 347 in St. James when a driver, allegedly under the influence, failed to stop at a red light. This driver collided with a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, as reported by the Suffolk County Police Department.

Espinosa was quickly taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, identified as Matthew Smith, 20, along with his passenger, John Andari, 25, were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Smith, a Hauppauge resident, has been charged with driving under the influence.

Authorities indicated that both vehicles involved in the accident have been seized for further investigation.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman expressed his deep sorrow over Espinosa’s passing, stating he was “heartbroken.” He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until her funeral.

“I am saddened by the loss of Officer Patricia Espinosa, who was a cherished member of the 5th Precinct,” he mentioned in a statement. “I had the honor of marching alongside her in the Puerto Rico Day Parade. My thoughts are with her husband, Officer Francisco Malaga, and her brother, Officer Cristian Almeida. Flags will be at half-staff starting Monday until her burial.”

Espinosa leaves behind a young daughter, Mia, who is just two years old. She came from a family with a strong law enforcement background, including her husband and two brothers, according to the police union.

Her colleagues described her as a hero, remembering her for her integrity, courage, kindness, and unwavering dedication to service.

Nassau County PBA President Tommy Shevlin stated, “Patricia understood the sacrifices of being in this profession—not just as an officer, but as a wife, sister, and mother in blue.” He further remarked on social media, “The fact that her life was taken by such a senseless act adds to the heartbreak of this loss. We stand with her family and our fellow officers as we honor her legacy, her sacrifice, and the family she has left behind.”

Officials are urging anyone who may have information regarding this tragic incident to contact the Major Incidents Unit at 631-852-6553.
