High School Senior Witnesses Truck Crash into School Bus

A high school senior from upstate New York had quite an unexpected morning when a reckless truck slammed into a parked school bus right near him.

Jeremiah Rutkowski, 17, stepped out of his home in Madison around 7:15 a.m. on April 7 to catch his bus when the crash unfolded just a few steps away. As he recalled, “I was terrified. I thought if it didn’t stop, either it would hit the bus and send something flying at me, or the entire truck would come hurtling my way.”

Reacting swiftly, the teen jumped back as chaos erupted in front of his house.

After the impact forced the bus into the street, Jeremiah dashed back to the porch, where he met his father, Matt Rutkowski, who rushed outside in worry.

They shared a heartfelt hug, taking in the terrible scene around them.

“First, I wanted to ensure my son was safe,” Matt said. “When I opened the door, I let out a huge sigh of relief—I honestly didn’t know what to expect. So, I hugged him right away.”

Noticing the driver was shaken and the kids were starting to get out of the bus, he quickly went inside to call 911.

Meanwhile, Jeremiah stood there, momentarily frozen from shock. “I was just so stunned I couldn’t move,” he remembered.

However, as students began to get off the bus, his instincts kicked in. He had been a counselor at a local camp, and suddenly he shifted from being a bystander to someone supporting others. “I just focused on how everyone was feeling about what happened,” he explained.

At the time of the incident, there were 23 students on the bus, which had its warning lights flashing while it was stopped.

Joshua Smith, 35, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries after being distracted by his cell phone right before crashing into the bus. He subsequently received multiple traffic citations.

In total, four students and two adults were hospitalized with minor injuries, including Smith, the bus driver, and two of the children who were in both vehicles.

For Matt Rutkowski, this alarming incident served as a reminder of how swiftly life can change. “Experiences like this make you really appreciate what you have. Things can change in an instant,” he reflected.
