Texas Woman Sentenced After Death of Undocumented Individual in Smuggling Trailer

A woman from San Antonio has been sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison for her role in a significant human smuggling operation. This was announced by the Justice Department following a conviction tied to the death of an illegal alien transported in a crowded trailer, whose body was later found discarded by her property.

Erika Aracely Carmona, 36, was alleged to have contributed to a smuggling network that facilitated the illegal entry of over 500 individuals and netted over $4.7 million during the ongoing border crisis under the Biden administration. Reports indicate she used the profits to purchase property in Von Ormey, Texas, while employing custom trailers with secret compartments for transporting illegal aliens.

“The loss of life in this case highlights that human smuggling transcends being just a crime; it represents a serious risk to our communities and those looking for a better life,” stated John A. Pasciucco, Acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI San Antonio. “Carmona’s sentencing showcases our commitment to dismantling organizations that prioritize profit over people.”

According to prosecutors, Carmona was linked to an Alien Smuggling Organization (ASO) responsible for smuggling activities that spanned from January 2021 to July 2022, coinciding with the Biden administration’s border crisis. Over this time frame, the ASO reportedly earned more than $4.7 million, often under severe conditions.

“During its operations, the ASO utilized specially designed ‘pull-and-go’ trailers for transportation,” mentioned officials from the Justice Department. “They initially employed an 18-wheeler fitted with concealed compartments capable of carrying up to 40 aliens, but this trailer was intercepted during an initial smuggling attempt.”

The tragic discovery of a deceased illegal immigrant on May 30, 2021, underscores the cruelty inherent in their smuggling practices. Shortly before, a driver transporting a trailer with hidden compartments had conveyed a substantial group of aliens from Eagle Pass, Texas, to San Antonio. Upon arrival, the driver found one person gravely ill inside the trailer, who later passed away within an hour. The smugglers disposed of the body in a ditch close to Carmona’s property used for smuggling.

“These foreign smuggling networks and Mexican cartels consistently prioritize profit over human life, frequently subjecting illegal aliens to life-threatening and deadly conditions during their journeys,” remarked Justin R. Simmons, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas. “In San Antonio, we witnessed the extreme danger involved in transporting people in any type of trailer. While we grieve the loss of lives in this particular case, we must also recognize the outstanding efforts by federal law enforcement to dismantle this criminal operation, as their actions ultimately have protective benefits.”

Carmona was apprehended on August 23, 2022, and entered a guilty plea on December 9 of the same year.

Recently, a judge in Del Rio, Texas, sentenced her to 231 months in prison along with a monetary judgment of $955,350 for conspiring to commit death and for illegally transporting aliens.

“On May 1, 2025, co-defendant Miguel Ángel Rivera received a 216-month prison sentence, taking into account time already served,” the Justice Department noted. “Additional co-defendants, Pedro Luis Martínez Jaquez and Jose Eduardo Rodriguez Moreno, are set to be sentenced in March, with U.S. District Judge Alia Moses overseeing the case.”
