Padres Player Returns to Mexico After Admitting Guilt in Human Smuggling Case

Unusual Circumstances for Padres Prospect

The San Diego Padres recently faced a surprising turn of events involving one of their top prospects.

Humberto Cruz, the organization’s leading pitcher on the farm and ranked fifth overall, has been voluntarily deported to Mexico. This follows his guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge concerning receiving payment for transporting undocumented immigrants within the United States.

Cruz, who is 19, might lose his 10-year work visa; however, he has the chance to reapply after five years if he maintains good behavior.

As reported by local media, Cruz acknowledged his Miranda rights during the proceedings but also admitted that the individuals he was transporting were undocumented immigrants, each expecting to pay $1,000.

The complaint notes, “When asked why he decided to transport the illegal alien, he stated that he did not work in the evening and needed the extra money.”

Cruz had signed a contract with the Padres in 2024, which included a bonus of $750,000.

In a statement released via the team, Cruz expressed remorse: “To my teammates, organization, fans, and family, I would like to express my sincere regret for the recent error in judgment that disappointed so many people I deeply respect.”

He continued, “I understand that my actions fell below the standards expected of me as a professional and as a representative of this organization. I take responsibility for my actions and recognize the impact they have had on my teammates, the club, and those who support us.”

Cruz offered apologies to his teammates and coaches for the distraction caused and acknowledged his failure to meet the professionalism that was expected of him. He also expressed regret for disappointing his fans, emphasizing the significance of their support.

“I regret the stress and disappointment this situation has caused,” he added. Cruz committed to reflecting on this incident, learning from it, and taking steps to ensure he moves forward responsibly. He expressed his intention to earn back trust through his actions.

Originally, Cruz faced a felony charge related to transporting illegal immigrants for financial gain alongside a misdemeanor for aiding unauthorized entry into the U.S. However, the felony charge was dropped after his guilty plea, resulting in a 30-day jail sentence, which was credited for time already served.
