Luka Doncic will face the revamped Knicks defense on the anniversary of the surprising trade.

Lakers vs. Knicks: A Year Later

A year ago, the Lakers faced off against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, and here they are again. Back on February 1, they managed to secure a 128-112 victory in a regular season matchup.

However, that game was quickly overshadowed by a stunning trade that saw the Lakers acquire Luka Doncic from the Mavericks in a three-team deal. The Mavericks ended up drafting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick but have struggled since trading away their franchise superstar. Anthony Davis, who came over in the deal, dealt with injuries, and Nico Harrison, the general manager behind the trade, was dismissed.

Fast forward a year, and the Lakers return to Madison Square Garden with Doncic playing arguably the best basketball of his career. His current averages include a staggering 33.7 points, 8.8 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game—truly impressive stats.

Doncic is definitely a contender for the MVP award, likely second to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Just recently, he recorded a triple-double before halftime in a game against the Wizards.

“It’s difficult to find the right words to describe his performance,” noted Lakers coach JJ Redick. “We’re in situations where it feels like we’re playing four-on-three, forcing the other team to bring in a second defender. That’s just brutal for them.”

Tonight’s matchup will present a significant challenge for the Knicks’ defense, which has seen a resurgence recently. During their current five-game winning streak, they’ve posted a defensive rating of 92.8—the best in the league during that time.

Last season was rough for the Knicks; they lost nine out of eleven games prior to that five-game stretch, sporting a defensive rating of 119.9, which was pretty near the bottom of the league. For this contest, they’ll likely have Mikal Bridges take on Doncic, with OG Anunoby and Landry Shamet also possibly stepping in.

Coach Mike Brown pointed out that stopping a player like Doncic isn’t just one person’s job. “You can’t isolate. It takes a group effort. Everyone has to be in sync, like a well-oiled machine. It’s about moving together, especially when the ball moves.”

In a recent game against the Trail Blazers, the Knicks managed to limit Deni Avdija, who averages 25.5 points, to just 11 points.

Yet, Doncic is on a level of his own. And considering this could be LeBron James’ last appearance at Madison Square Garden, fans are shelling out big bucks for tickets.

In this game, Doncic has become the main star for the Lakers. It’s clear he will be the brightest asset on the court, outshining not just James but also Jalen Brunson.
