Protests in Los Angeles Lead to Arrests
Last weekend, numerous protests against ICE erupted in Los Angeles, resulting in at least a dozen arrests. Chaos unfolded, prompting one of the state’s leading prosecutors to label some protesters as “anarchists.”
Most arrests occurred in downtown Los Angeles, where violence escalated. There were reports of assaults involving deadly weapons against police officers.
One individual was taken into custody for violating curfew, while six others were detained for not dispersing, according to various reports.
Footage shared by U.S. Attorney Bill Ezeiri showed clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. Federal agents were seen forcibly removing loud protesters from the scene. In a video clip, an officer, donned in a helmet and holding zip ties, could be heard repeatedly instructing the crowd to “Go back, go back, go back!”
“We’ve effectively prepared for those looking to instigate violence and arrested individuals who shifted from protesting to engaging in criminal activities,” Ezeiri remarked. He emphasized that they would not permit attacks on federal properties and their staff.
The protests initiated on Friday and grew more intense into Saturday evening. By 9:20 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department declared the gathering unlawful, urging participants to disperse.
“We’re taking this seriously. We’ve deployed federal agents to ensure the safety of our property and personnel. Anyone breaking the law will be presumptively arrested and face federal prosecution,” Ezeiri stated on social media.
Aerial footage captured fireworks igniting near Alameda and Temple Streets, where several detentions occurred. Federal authorities confiscated bottles, rocks, and large fireworks, and used tear gas on crowds, as reported by the police.
As of now, the total number of detainees and the specific charges against them are still unverified.
