Disruption at College Basketball Game
Benji Taylor, the head coach of the Tuskegee University men’s basketball team, faced a tense situation on Saturday night after his team’s loss to Morehouse College. He was handcuffed and escorted off the court by police, which certainly left an impression on those present.
A video captured the exchange between Taylor and a police officer during the handshake line following the game. Taylor seemed frustrated and was gesturing around the gym, but the officer appeared to take offense, leading to the incident that unfolded.
During the chaotic scene, Taylor, who is 58, found himself at the center of a disturbance. It’s reported that Morehouse football players entered the court area, and Taylor claimed he was trying to address an issue with a security guard at that moment.
Reginald Ruffin, the athletic director at Tuskegee, mentioned that there is a clear need for enhanced safety measures, especially in light of the rivalry between the institutions. He commented on the unexpected presence of football players and highlighted potential risks.
It was noted that Taylor had asked an officer to remove some individuals from the handshake line, but the response he received was not welcoming. Reflecting on the incident, Taylor expressed feeling “speechless and shaken” by the treatment he received, emphasizing that it was a dangerous environment, especially with the opposing team’s football players yelling nearby.
After some time, Taylor was released from his handcuffs and allowed to leave the arena with his team. No charges were pressed following the unfolding events.
Currently, Taylor is in his sixth season with the Golden Tigers, who hold an impressive record of 15 wins and 5 losses, remaining undefeated at home with a 9-0 record.
