Team USA loses to Türkiye in the last Group D game at the World Cup

US Men’s National Soccer Team Suffer Narrow Defeat to Turkiye

The U.S. men’s national soccer team faced a tough loss against Turkiye, ending the game 3-2 in their final Group D match, with Khan Ayhan scoring the decisive goal. While this outcome stings, it doesn’t impact the U.S.’s chances of continuing in the FIFA World Cup.

Team USA had hoped to build momentum leading into the knockout stage, aiming to be the first team to secure three victories in World Cup history. Instead, they left the field with a sense of disappointment in Los Angeles.

Though the tournament has been challenging for Turkiye, they managed to celebrate this hard-fought victory against a U.S. team that saw multiple changes made by manager Mauricio Pochettino to keep players fresh for the upcoming matches.

Fans in Inglewood likely felt the excitement surge when Auston Trusty netted a goal just three minutes into the game, connecting on a corner from Sebastian Berhalter. The crowd erupted as Trusty celebrated with his teammates.

However, Turkiye wasn’t ready to give up. Arda Güler, a 21-year-old player from Real Madrid, capitalized on a defensive lapse to equalize the score just minutes later, leaving the match tied at one goal each.

The match was intense, and both teams displayed their determination. USA was eager to showcase their prowess while Turkiye played with a sense of pride. The visitors then took the lead when Olukun Kökçü scored, quieting the crowd as the ball found the net.

The first half concluded with Turkiye maintaining their lead. But, the return of “Captain America,” Christian Pulisic, brought new hope for the U.S. after he missed a previous match due to injury. He made an immediate impact as he pressured Turkiye’s defense, leading to Berhalter’s shot that equalized the game at two goals.

With the momentum swinging back to the home side, both teams pushed to take control of the match. Pulisic had a near miss, his left-footed shot barely skimming past the post. Yet, as the final whistle approached, Ayhan made a crucial slide to score, sealing the victory for Turkiye.

Looking ahead, the USMNT is set to play their Round of 32 match in the San Francisco Bay Area on July 1st at 8:00 p.m.
